and retailers of personal
care products. The
Spa/Wellness industry creates
a
high demand
for wellness and health products both on the local and international
markets.
Essential
oil is the pulse
of the wellness
and aromatherapy industry with
its key volatiles responsible
for therapeutic and soothing effects.
In
a 2009 survey conducted in Jamaica, 81% of the spas
interviewed utilize essential oil from lemon grass in
their suite of treatments. The versatility of lemon grass essential oil is
partly due to its high citral
content which is a key
component of per- fumes, cosmetics and
beverages.
Set-up cost
Equipment cost for a small manufacturing plant can vary from approximately J$250,000 for a manual operation (50 gal) to J$3 million for a small (100 Gal) semi-automated plant.
Initial investment (50 gal operation) can produce a total of 31,000 x 250 ml units of body wash at a cost of $J2.7m in month 1 to generate net income of J$21.2m. Unit cost of the product can range between J$88 and J$250 depending on the ingredients and packaging used. Retail selling price can range between J$177 and J$550.
