Doing Business Report Reflects TAJ's Improvements In Paying Taxes

The continued efforts by Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) to make paying taxes easier have resulted in Jamaica improving in the paying taxes index of the latest Doing Business Report (DBR), produced by the International Finance Corporation and the World Bank. The 11 point improvement was due mainly to TAJ, in partnership with the National Housing Trust, National Insurance Scheme and the HEART Trust NTA, allowing employers to make joint payroll payments and reports.

Over the last few years, Tax Administration Jamaica has introduced a number of initiatives and programmes aimed at making paying taxes easier. Chief among these is TAJ’s partnering with the other agencies to provide amalgamated service for the payment and reporting of payroll taxes.  This move has resulted in employers now being able to make a single monthly payment of statutory deductions using the S01 Form, as well as a filing a consolidated employer’s annual return S02 Form; instead of making multiple payments and filing multiple returns, at multiple agencies. This has caused business persons to save time and money in doing their payroll tax transactions.
Even further improvement is expected in the tax criteria for next year’s report, as Tax Administration Jamaica in collaboration with the other government agencies, have amalgamated the process of filing a single payroll annual return. Although this is already in effect, the DBR did not reflect this change based on the year 2011 reporting period used. Further, the availability of online payment and filing options were not taken into consideration in the DBR, due to the uptake being less than 50%.  TAJ is however strategizing to improve the usage of the Jamaica Tax Portal and to continue promoting the various channels available to make paying taxes easier.
In addition to the major initiatives relating to payroll taxes, customers are able to use, not only, the wide network of 29 tax offices located across the island, but are also able to access service through multiple channels, including online and other service options available.
