The world's store of digital information increases tenfold every five years. The cloud containing most of this data is vast and abstract; the technology that keeps it running takes up real space — a lot of it. There are over 500,000 data centers throughout the world, the equivalent of almost 6,000 football fields. Data centers are quickly becoming a pressing issue for many executives as companies consider how to keep costs down and environmental impact to a minimum.
According to a report put out by Greenpeace in April, the electricity demand of data centers and the telecommunications network is rivaling that of most nations. If the cloud were itself a country, it would rank fifth in the world on energy demand behind the U.S., China, Russia, and Japan."
